Will $27 Million Dollar Pedestrian Bridge Curb Knockdown Car Accidents?

Just last week, it was revealed that a $27 million dollar pedestrian suspension bridge project near the San Diego convention center and Petco Park may not be completed on schedule. Original estimates put the bridge’s completion to early next year but the committee overseeing the venture indicated it may be as late as Spring or Summer before the project is finalized. The bridge, which is being funded by taxpayer money, could be a welcome addition to the city since it could very well cut down on the number or pedestrian knockdown accidents in the area. Still, as the well-known design firm T.Y. Lin gears up to finish the ambitious endeavor, people wonder if the bridge will really help put a dint in the alarming statistics of pedestrian deaths that occur not only in the San Diego area, but nationwide.

One-year-old Hit and Dragged up Redondo Ave. in Long Beach

A one-year-old girl was struck and killed by an Dodge Durango SUV in Long Beach late Friday night and was dragged nearly a mile down Redondo Avenue before the driver finally stopped. SUV driver Neely Dinkins, 33, was charged with vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, driving under the influence, hit and run and driving with a suspended license. His bail has been set at $50,000 dollars. Another child was also critically injured after being hit by the SUV at about 8:30 p.m. Friday. Both children were struck at 10th Street and Redondo Avenue and one was dragged several blocks to the intersection of Redondo and Wilton Street. That child was declared dead at the scene.

Hit-and-Run Driver Mows down Laguna Beach Victim

A fifty-year-old pedestrian that was struck down and killed by a hit-and-run driver remains unidentified. The man was hit by a truck while traveling on Laguna Canyon Road in the early morning hours. The crash was first reported at 3:25 a.m. in the northbound lanes of 133. Police searched an area that included the 73 toll road in an attempt to locate the victim’s car but authorities were unable to find it.

Hit-and Run Driver Kills Man in Lancaster

A 26-year-old man was struck and killed by a driver who fled the scene of the accident. The hit-and-run incident occurred at 9:30 p.m. at West Avenue O near 180th Street East and left Abraham Guevara, 26, dead. It was believed that Guevara was jogging on the north shoulder of “Avenue O” when he was hit. A 40-year-old male pedestrian was struck and killed while attempting to cross a San Diego County intersection this past Sunday, authorities said.
