Lin  gears up to finish the ambitious endeavor,  people wonder if the bridge will really help put a dint in the alarming statistics of pedestrian deaths that occur not only in the San Diego area, but nationwide.

The male driver of the Scion was knocked unconscious in the collision and was immediately  rushed to the Western Medical Center-Santa.   The Honda driver, who was female, sustained injuries to the head and face  and was taken to Kaiser in Irvine.  Authorities indicated that the crash occurred after the Honda plowed into the Scion shortly after the traffic light  turned green.  The Scion was sent spinning in the direction of the Mercedes, who was also hit.

Authorities will have to  thoroughly investigate the matter to see what happened and who was at fault.  Often times the answers may not be cut and dry.  For example, the Honda driver did crash  into the Scion but may have done so because her brakes suddenly failed.  If so, both she and the Scion driver, who were injured, could sue the car manufacturer under product liability laws.  This would be due to the fact that a faulty auto product, in this scenario, the brakes, were to blame for the wreck.

Paramedics took the boy to Sharp Grossmont Hospital for treatment of minor abrasions to his lower back and arms.  He is said to be recovering this Friday afternoon.  The motorist in the car was unhurt.

The Accident could have been Much Worse

Authorities indicate that the child was wearing a properly fitted bicycle helmet which mitigated his injuries.   It is certain that the injuries would have been far worse if this was not the case.

In this incident, no criminal or civil charges had been brought against the driver who hit the boy.

The incident occurred at 5:45 a.m. in the Torrey Highlands area when the 23-year old’s car drifted off State route 56, overturned and tumbled down an ice plant covered embankment. The driver  was  a San Diego resident whose name is being withheld pending notification of family. She died shortly after the crash, which occurred on the westbound of the freeway near Camino del Sur.   The woman was driving a 2008 Volkswagen Jetta and dressed in military-style fatigues and boots.

The automobiles involved were a gray Chevrolet  Aveo LT, a brown  F150 Ford Pickup, and another unidentified pick up.  According to an eye witness,  the accident was instigated by a wrong way driver.  Investigators were called onto the scene around 11:23 a.m. and are looking into the wrong way driver scenario.  Ambulances were called to the scene but it was not known at press time if anyone was injured and sent to the hospital.  A brief SigAlert was issued and lifted not  long after the incident.

They were struck by a 1992 Infiniti J30 that was traveling northbound when it swerved off to the right hand side of the freeway just south of the I-805 interchange.  The car collided with the slow-moving Caltrans van on the shoulder shortly after 10:30 a.m. and  bounced off the van before sliding into the man and woman that were working in front of it.

The duo was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital for treatment of major injuries. The driver of the Infiniti, a 50-year-old woman, was taken to neighboring UCSD Medical Center where she was treated for minor injuries and released that afternoon. The man that was standing inside the studio at the time remained unharmed as he was standing behind a table at the time of the collision.

Although this story has a bit of a comical edge to it (and no one was hurt)  the situation could have had dire consequences for all involved. Diaz’s vehicle was marked “ISD Mail Services”,  ISD stands for  the  “Internal Services Division” in Los Angeles County.  The cause of the crash is currently undergoing investigation.
