San Diego Man Dies While Climbing Cowles Mountain

The victim in a fatal climbing incident on Cowles Mountain has been identified as a San Diego man, Raymond Newsom Mathias Jr. Mathias, 67, was located by a group of hikers on on the park mountain, collapsed on a path, evidently passed out. According to witnesses, Mathias had hiked up the mountain two or three times when he passed out. One of the hikers among the group who located Mathias performed CPR, but their efforts, even after being taken over by medics, were unsuccessful. Only half an hour after being found, Mathias was pronounced dead at the scene. For now, there was no clear indication of any sort of foul play.
