A car accident resulted in a fatality Tuesday night when a man crossing the Harbor (110) freeway in Wilmington was struck by a car. The accident occurred at around 8:50 p.m. in the No. 2 lane of the southbound freeway, which was south of Pacific Coasts highway. The man died on the scene shortly after.
The woman who hit the pedestrian was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban and traveling 65 miles per hour before the man stepped in front of her car. She told the authorities that the man left her little time to react and that she had no way to avoid hitting him. She was unhurt after the collision.
Officers looking into the incident have no idea why the man walked towards the center of the freeway and hope to have some answers soon. This information will of course aid family members in receiving closure in regards to their family member’s death. Investigators could also learn if the woman who hit the man had been traveling the speed limit as she claimed. if not, she could be held accountable for the man’s death. In such a case, a wrongful death lawsuit could be filed.
