A car accident in the Castaic region left one man dead after he plunged to his death by careening off a canyon. The man, who was driving a Los Angeles Country van, fell 100 feet to his death and was identified this past Saturday by a coroner’s investigator. He was 63-year-old Francisco Ramon Diaz, a resident of the South Gate area who had been driving west on Lake Hughes Road just due east of Ridge Route Road at around 10:50 a.m. Friday morning when he lost control of his Chevy Astro. Having strayed into the Angeles National forest, he could not navigate his vehicle and drove off the road.
Diaz’s vehicle was marked “ISD Mail Services”, ISD stands for the “Internal Services Division” in Los Angeles County. The cause of the crash is currently undergoing investigation.
It is far too easy to chalk a car accident like this one up to driver’s error without knowing all the facts. Appearances are often deceiving. What could look like an elderly gentleman who lost his way with tragic results could very well the fault of a malfunctioning auto part. Also—was the area he was traveling in well marked to indicate a dangerous plunge ahead? So many factors could come into play to give the man’s family the ability to pursue a wrongful death claim if the accident was not Diaz’s fault.
