Huntington Harbor Boating Accident Results in Two Fatalities
Jul 1st, 2009 by ANorman
An inflatable boat crashed into a bridge in Huntington Harbour early Wednesday morning, injuring one man and killing two others. The deceased males, Caleb Steele, 30 and Shawn Wilson, 35, both residents of the upscale Huntington Beach area, were killed after their 12-foot Zodiac-style boat collided with the Gilbert Bridge at around 1 a.m.. Witnesses say that the boat approached the Shelter Channel at a high rate of speed, making tight circles known as “doughnuts” before the crash.
The sole survivor managed to swim ashore and was taken to the UC Irvine Medical center with severe head injuries. The other two men were recovered from the water around 9 a.m.. Authorities are uncertain as to whether or not alcohol played a role in the accident.
While it is very possible that the men were drinking and behaving irresponsibly prior to the boat accident, it is just as likely that the boat simply began to malfunction. Witness reports seem to indicate that something had gone seriously wrong prior to the wreck. This could indicate a problem with the boat itself. If so, the family of the deceased could pursue the boat’s manufacturers with a wrongful death lawsuit.
