Discarded oxygen canisters prompted an OC evacuation after they began exploding outside an elementary school. Ten Huntington Beach homes were involved in the evacuation and although no one was injured, a canister flew over neighboring houses and landed in the street. The incident could have had tragic consequences; authorities say and were thankful that a summer school class was not in session at Ralph E. Hawed Elementary school at the time.
The incident happened at around 2:40 p.m. after a trash truck pulled into the elementary school on Yellowstone Drive in Huntington Beach for a pick up. The driver had just collected the trash when he smelled smoke and heard one of the canisters explode. Three more canisters exploded as well and soon emergency crews filed onto the scene. Ten neighborhood homes were evacuated as fire authorities searched for more canisters. They soon located one and a bomb squad detonated it after evacuating ten surrounding homes. Authorities are still investigating the reason the canisters were there as well as the cause for their ignition.
