11-Year-Old Girl Dies After Huntington Beach Boating Accident

11-year-old Alyssa Squirrell died after a tragic boat accident which occurred during a junior lifeguard training exercise in the Huntington Beach area Tuesday afternoon. The little girl belonged to a troupe of junior lifeguards who were performing an exercise known as a “speed drop.” During this training exercise, the kids would drop into the water off of a moving rescue boat. The ocean was choppy and the instructors did not see Squirrell who was hit by propellers.
The young girl was taken to the UC Irvine Medical Center where she later died. Although it is the first fatal accident that has occurred since the junior lifeguard program’s inception in 1964, Orange County officials are reviewing the matter to ensure all due safety precautions were in place.
Accidents can and will happen and in some cases, they are unavoidable. However, one would have to look at the case in it’s entirety to see if proper safeguards were in place. For instance, should the children had performed a speed drop if the waters were choppy? Was there a way to account for all children so no one was hurt in the process? The answers to these questions will enable the family to know if they can file a wrongful death lawsuit in regards to the case.
